Adventure Darts
A free whiteboard game by fragsworth
Rules Version 0.01 (Nov. 1, 2016)
Adventure Darts is a game where you draw stuff on a whiteboard, then play a fantasy RPG-style game by shooting nerf darts at the stuff you drew.
You need 2-4 players. It's best with 3 or 4. You need at least one nerf gun and some nerf darts. You also need a whiteboard. It takes about 15 minutes to draw the board (which can be used for many games), and about 60-90 minutes per game.

If this is your first time reading this: Try playing this version first before changing it. It takes some effort to balance changes. Draw the following image on your whiteboard (the rectangle is 6x4 feet), and try to keep things relatively to scale. It doesn't need to be perfect - your drawings can vary slightly from the original in size and the game will still work fine. Before you play, take a picture while it still looks pretty.
Make sure you put "ADVENTURE DARTS" at the top of the board, otherwise how will anyone know you're playing Adventure Darts?
Create a scoreboard (somewhere on the side, so you don't get in the way of the darts) for whoever is playing. Use your own names because these names belong to us:
| Fragsworth | Asminthe | Doogog | Knox |
HP | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 |
DMG | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
GOLD | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 |
LOCATION | - | - | - | - |
Rules
Each player starts with 10 HP, 1 DMG, and 2 GOLD. If you reach 0 HP, you die and are out of the game. Your goal is to be the last player alive.
Take your turn by shooting a dart at the WORLD in the center of the whiteboard. Where you hit determines your turn:
- DUNGEON, FOREST, MOUNTAIN: Shoot a dart at the separately drawn board for that location. If you hit a monster, do BATTLE with it.
- CASTLE (in the center of the DUNGEON on the WORLD): The king gives you a quest to kill a monster in the Dungeon. Continue your turn as if you had hit the DUNGEON, but receive 2x LOOT for any monster killed.
- DRUID (tiny spot between the FOREST and MOUNTAIN, also beneath the MOUNTAIN's own map): The DRUID gives you a quest to kill monsters in the forest. Continue your turn as if you had hit the FOREST, but receive 2x LOOT for any monster killed.
- SHOP: Purchase a weapon that changes your DMG to X for 2^(X-1) GOLD. (See table below)
- WIZARD: A mad wizard offers to perform dark magic for you. Pay (# of living players)*2*X GOLD to deal X DMG to all other players. (See table below)
- TOWER: Shoot a dart at the separately drawn TOWER location. If you land on a monster, do BATTLE with it. None of the TOWER monsters have LOOT or GOLD. If you kill a monster at the TOWER, deal the "-X" amount listed on the TOWER to all other players as DMG.
- SHERIFF: If the SHERIFF dies, PvP becomes enabled and the SHERIFF location is now empty.
- TAVERN: If you have at least 1 GOLD, you lose 1 GOLD and gain 2 HP.
- INN: You can choose to spend 2^(X-1) GOLD to gain X HP. (See table below)
Battle
When you land on an enemy, you fight them at the BATTLE board. Enemies have 4 stats: HP / DMG / LOOT / GOLD. You shoot darts at the BATTLE board until either you kill the monster, die, or flee. Players have what is known as "first strike".
- 0: Deal your DMG to the monster. If the monster is not dead, the monster then deals its DMG to you.
- +1: Deal 1 + (your DMG) to the monster. If the monster is not dead, the monster then deals its DMG to you.
- +2: Deal 2 + (your DMG) to the monster. If the monster is not dead, the monster then deals its DMG to you.
- Miss the board: You miss, and the monster deals its DMG to you.
- -1: You catastrophically miss, and the monster deals 1 extra DMG to you.
- FLEE: You escape, but the monster still deals its DMG to you. Your turn ends without killing the monster.
Loot
When you kill an enemy from the BATTLE board, you shoot a single dart at the LOOT board.
- Whatever you get, multiply it by the monster's LOOT stat.
- Also multiply by the CASTLE or DRUID bonus, if applicable.
- You also get additional GOLD equal to the monster's GOLD stat.
PvP
- When the SHERIFF is killed, PvP is enabled. Begin tracking where the players landed in the WORLD on the scoreboard.
- After the SHERIFF dies, every player except for the one who killed the sheriff is immune to PvP until their turn begins.
- When PvP is enabled, when any player shoots at the WORLD, landing on the same WORLD location as another player causes a PvP battle if any player in that location desires.
- In a PvP battle, every other player at that WORLD location applies their DMG to the current (shooting) player, and then if the current player is still alive, the current player applies their DMG to every other player at that WORLD location.
- For PvP location purposes, the CASTLE counts as the DUNGEON, and the DRUID counts as the FOREST.
Special Rules
- There is only one OGRE, SHERIFF, DRAKE, and DRAGON. These names are prefixed with a "1". If a player kills the enemy at that location, the location no longer has that monster in it (and thereafter has no effect unless otherwise stated)
- When the DRAKE is killed, an evil force descends upon the world. For the rest of the game, at the end of each player's turn, they lose 1 HP.
- When the DRAGON is killed, an even greater evil force descends upon the world. For the rest of the game, at the end of each player's turn, they lose 2 HP.
- The DRAKE and DRAGON effects stack. If both the DRAKE and DRAGON are dead, at the end of each player's turn, that player should lose a total of 3 HP.
- The ROAD counts as the default location in the world, if you do not land on any other named place, and includes completely wild misses.
- The MOUNTAIN gives you an extra chance to go for the DRUID, which will send you to the FOREST. For PvP purposes, treat it as if your turn ended, and you are starting an extra turn at the forest.
- If you're at the MOUNTAIN, and you miss completely, you fell down a cliff. You lose 2 HP.
- Hidden in the forest is a life shrine. You can land on it for +4 health (and fight no monster)
- Also hidden in the forest is an evil shrine. You can land on it to remove 5 gold from every player, including yourself.
Shooting rules
- Use dart guns.
- If you have no guns, but you have nerf darts for some reason, and you can't wait to order a $10 gun off Amazon, then I guess you can throw with your hands. You'll probably just have to pretend you're having a good time because without a ton of practice you're just going to be flipping them sideways and never hit the board.
- Put some kind of line on the ground about 15 feet from the board for everyone to stand behind when shooting. When you shoot, both feet have to be on the ground behind the line, but you can lean over it as much as you want.
- Adjust the shooting distance so that it's difficult to hit the smaller things on the board (+2 DMG, etc.).
- When a dart hits the board, if the dart is touching any line on the whiteboard (even barely), you get to choose the location on any side of that line. This is important to make rulings simple.
- Remove all darts from the board before every shot.
- Hitting a location on the wrong board counts as a miss.
- Whoever was last player to take their turn should keep score for the current player.
General strategy
- Locations that say "-X HP" are not strategically optimal places to aim for. You lose the HP displayed on the location and end your turn.
- Some might disagree, but when shooting at the BATTLE board, you probably want to aim for the center.

- Scoreboard:
| Fragsworth | Asminthe | Doogog | Knox |
HP | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 |
DMG | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
GOLD | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 |
LOCATION | - | - | - | - |
- Fragsworth goes first. He shoots at the WORLD board, hitting the DUNGEON.
- Then he shoots at the DUNGEON board, hitting the SKELETON, whose stats are 2/1/1/2: 2 HP, 1 DMG, 1 LOOT, 2 GOLD.
- Then he shoots at the BATTLE board, hitting 1x DMG.
- Fragsworth takes 1 damage and deals 1 to the SKELETON:
| Fragsworth | Asminthe | Doogog | Knox |
HP | 9 | 10 | 10 | 10 |
DMG | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
GOLD | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 |
LOCATION | - | - | - | - |
- The fight continues, since the SKELETON still has 1 life. We're doing this part in our heads because we're smart.
- He shoots at the BATTLE board again, and hits again, for 1x DMG.
- Since the skeleton died and players deal damage first, Fragsworth takes no damage.
- Fragsworth shoots at the LOOT board, and hits the 2 HP.
- The skeleton only applies a 1x multiplier to LOOT, so 2 HP * 1 = 2 HP.
- The skeleton provides an additional 2 gold.
- We update the scoreboard:
| Fragsworth | Asminthe | Doogog | Knox |
HP | 11 | 10 | 10 | 10 |
DMG | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
GOLD | 4 | 2 | 2 | 2 |
LOCATION | - | - | - | - |
- Fragsworth's turn is over, and it is now Asminthe's turn.
- Asminthe shoots at the WORLD board to begin his turn, and the game continues.
